Very disappointed with the case, May 23, 2011

I was expecting a quality as good as the Defender case I have for my iPhone.
It was very hard to put together. The iPhone one was so easy.
One of the things that is really turning me off is the fact that for the iPad 2, they decided to make the top and bottom borders really thin, my only suspicion for them to want to do this is so the people that bought the white iPad2 would have an area free to display that they have a white iPad2. While the defender case I see for the iPad (1) has the thicker border on the front.
The result of making the top and bottom front area thin is that it feels very delicate, more so on the bottom part, and when you are putting the case on it feels like it is about to brake, it does not snap on place easily; also on the fact that it is too fin: If I was worry about breaking just by putting the case on, I cannot image handling a fall, meaning, the first time I were to drop my iPad, there is no way the plastic will not break in the bottom part. I don't think it will be as much of problem on top because the top front is glued to the back top area, making it sturdier.
The other negative I have is that when placing the iPad2 into the case, it pushed the protect film from the top area, the funny part is that it did that only on the middle, on top of the front camera and a little to the top right. I was able to fix the top right corner but the piece on top of the camera looks horrible and it is beyond repair. Let me point out I did not use the protective screen that came with the case, I had a ZAGG one installed before I even got the case and I don't see any reason why it should not fit if Otter did plan on the case fitting their protected film. The ZAGG film was installed by a professional and it was in place correctly.

Let me point out that I am a fan of the Otter products and that I why I feel so disappointed with this one.

If I were to have made suggestions to Otter, I would have suggested to have done the case with the same principals as they did the iPhone4 one, where you have 2 plastic with the shield for the screen already in it. It would be an easy snap in and out of the plastic one and then just placing the rubber around it. And to have kept the front top and bottom borders thick. If one was too worried about showing off their white iPad2, I don't think they would have bought an Otter case anyway.

First off I'd like to say I love otterbox products my family swears by outer box cases for all are cell phones (2: Blackberry curve's, iPod classic, iPod nano, first gen iPhone, 3GS iPhone, first gen iPad, and now iPad 2 all have defender series) I would highly recommend any of otterbox cell phone and the FIRST gen iPad cases. (Note that when it came to the iPads I only recommended the first gen. And hears why.

When you were a kid was there ever something new that came out you wanted so bad you'd do anything to get it. But you had wait for it to come out in stores or wait until Christmas and finally the day comes and you get it, but after a few minutes you relies it doesn't function exactly as it appeared in an ad you seen on TV, magazine, or internet and it really disappointed you to the point it makes mad, sad all at the same time like someone is ripping your hart out. Well that's how I felt after I put my new case on my iPad 2. It's like the designers of the new iPad 2 case were trying to come up with a completely reengineered case that incorporated new features... Why did they completely redesign it? Looking at all our other defender cases we have around the house, they all have vary similar characteristics and function. Except the defender case for ipad2 Like they all have a.....

1: holster or cover that completely covers the entire screen (NOT on the iPad 2 case. All four corners of the iPad 2 screen are exposed.)

2: the covers that go over the dock connector and headphone jack are secured in a way that they are not accidentally flipped out when you don't want them opened. (NOT so on iPad 2 case. No matter how I hold it every protective cover becomes knocked lose vary vary easily and just flops around. Not vary protective if they're constantly open are they. And somewhat difficult and vary time-consuming to get back in place properly.)

3: stand for watching videos. this is the one and only thing I like about the iPad 2 case. The way the new stand flips out is vary nice!!

More downfalls of the new iPad 2 case.....

1: the tabs that cover the camera and the home button when the cover is snapped on the front for when your transporting iPad 2 presses the home button and wakes up iPad constantly when iPad is in backpack. Running battery down. Not a big drain on battery but still, it's a flaw in the design.

2: the tabs on cover when the cover is snapped on the back stick out past the curve on the back, making it uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time.

I'd like to see otterbox take the first gen case and fit it to the iPad 2. Then put 4 holes (with plastic screen just like the rear camera on iphones) in the cover for the back camera. & just enlarge the hole in the font to reveal the front camera. & use the newly design folding stand

Sorry this review was so long I just don't want anybody else to be as disappointed in the iPad 2 case as I was.

I received my iPad 2 Defender Series case today and I must state that I am very disappointed at the quality and so called "ruggedness". I have an OtterBox for my iPad (1st Gen), iPhone 4, old iPhone 3GS and every one of my family members cell phones and have never had an issue with paying the price for the superior quality and protection, this time I feel ripped off. From the flimsy 'polycarbonate' case, to the thin silicone cover this is at most an average product for a premium price. Every port cover on this is flimsy, does not seat well and creates a vulnerable point in the event of a 'mishap', not to mention that the top and bottom of the polycarbonate case is so flimsy that it feels as though it will snap off if handled wrong. Oh, and whats up with how fat this case is when the cover is on, it's thicker than my iPad 1st Gen in its Defender Series case, kind of defeats one of the selling points of the product they are attempting to protect... Up to this point I have been a huge fan, supporter, and endorser of your OtterBox and their products, this however, has really soured my opinion, especially given the wait for the release... What a let down!

Overall, the skin is nice. It's not hard plastic, it's more rubbery and flexible which is what I wanted. While it was nice that this came with a free screen guard, I couldnt apply it without getting bubbles in it and the cut seemed slightly off. I ended up throwing it out and will look elsewhere for one.

This is the second case we tried - the first one was thicker and opaque. This one is thinner and translucent, with a pattern all over the back. We returned the first one mainly because the iPad could not be charged or synced with the case on - we had to remove the bottom edge of the case - the opening for the cable connector was too small. It would also not fit in the dock with the case on, but that may not be possible with ANY case. This one allows charging and syncing, and is nice and thin, so it doesn't make the iPad too bulky. The only thing they could improve on a bit is the grip - the plastic is shiny, and not as grippy as it could be, but it still works as advertised, and is a good deal for the money.

I was looking for case to protect my iPad from scratches and I came across this one. It is cheaper than the iLuv clear case but it doesn't come with a stand like the iLuv. The main different between the 2 is that this one is made of clear rubber and the iLuv is more thick plastic.
It is easy to put on and makes the iPad looks amazing. The design on the back enhances Apple aluminum original design. I wanted something that didn't alter that design because that makes the iPad a winner. The product pictures doesn't really do justice on how the case looks and feels like.
As an extra they include a screen protect film. This film is not well cut and it would be better if you cut it 2 to 3 millimeters on the bottom part before you apply it because it will make you bubbles.
Other than that I recommend this product to anyone who is looking to preserve the original iPad look.

We bought a different case when we purchased the iPad. The case wouldn't hold the iPad in securely and didn't allow for a stand. The Bear Motion case is a little less expensive than the first case we had and a hundred times better. It holds the iPad securely, protects it and the stand feature is wonderful -- holding it at just the right angle for use. I would highly recommend the case to iPad owners.

The ipad fits well into the pocket. The cutouts are where they need to be and allow plenty of room for effective operation.

The case itself looks good and the stitching has held up to my frequent use. My pocket has loosened up a bit, but that's only because I accidentally stretched it while putting another item into the bag where my ipad was already stored.

The magnetic lock is a nice touch. It's not too firm or too light.

This case is a bit cheaper than others out there. If you're looking to pay a little less and get good quality then go for this one.

Leather material really mades it luxury looking. Unlike some other cases, iPad stays in this case very securely. I purposely shaken the case vigorously and iPad stays secured without any problem. Very nice fit and very practical design.

It appeared to be a clever way to cover the front of the IPad2 without adding much bulk or thickness.
The magnetic switching on and off by lifting the half cover seems nifty.

In practice it turned out not to be smart.

I have two of these covers. one of polyurethane and one is black leather.

With both, the stand that is made by folding the cover into a triangle is not stable and the IPad falls over when the screen is touched with any pressure, as when typing.
Sometimes it topples if the pad is just jostled slightly, and then the pad gets a healthy knock.
That cannot be good for it, and each time I check if the glass cracked.
Not yet, but maybe next time...

As it is really a half cover: it only protects the glass front, if that, and the aluminum back is prone to scratches and dings.

In the case of a long fall the pad has no protection at all.
That is 500 dollars - or more - of an investment in a nice Apple IPad shattered.

If you use the cover enough you will find that the magnetic lining of the cover attracts metallic dust.
Some of that dust is quite able to scratch the face of the pad.

I would rather have a thicker more protective cover for such a neat - and expensive - device like the IPad2.
And with the price of the delicate IPad, it is a bit surprising that the pad comes with no case supplied.
Wait, its not surprising, as Apple wants you to buy a pricey "smart cover".
As well as purchasing another IPad when the first one shatters in a fall.

Actually I am not taking the chance, I will not use these covers anymore.
It is just too risky, and no gives protection to the IPad.
I cannot recommend them in any way.

It really isn't perfect. I mean, I know it's just an iPad case, but for the price, it should be more functional. I love the fact that it works with the design of the iPad, not against it. The main problem I have with this case is that it doesn't have a way to magnetically keep itself together when I'm viewing the iPad, and the case is open. While it's closed, this is a great cover. When it's open, it's super awkward.

The cover works mostly as expected and looks nice, but it does not "clean the screen" as Apple suggests, instead leaving three thick lines across it. This makes the need for a wiping cloth more pressing since the three lines are pretty distracting (almost more so than the fingerprints).

Also, after having my iPad 2 in the car with me for a day, I found that the powerful magnets had picked up some sort of metal particles that I had to pull off of them. Had I not noticed them for a while, they may have actually scratched up my screen every time I close the cover.

And as others have said, this thing does nothing to protect the back, nor does it work well with any of the current crop of iPad back covers. Still I like how it looks on my white iPad and I'm sure the protection is pretty good (though I did also purchase a clear screen film to make sure).

I received the item as described (5 in 1) and it works fine. The device was recognized by my iPad1 and I inserted an SDHC memory card from my D90 and the pictures (RAW) transferred fine. I used the included video cable and attached it to my plasma TV and watched streaming video for an hour. I almost didn't order it based on the prior reviews but decided to try it relying on Amazon's return policy if it didn't work. I'm glad I took a chance since it seems to work fine.

This product sounded promising. However, applying it was virtually impossible. I carefully followed the instructions. Keeping bubbles out was impossible, no matter how hard I tried. The first attempt was partially successful for the first part, but not the second half of the screen. When I pulled it up to adjust, the whole sheet developed bubbles. I cannot recommend this product. It's probably better to just be careful when using the iPad.

I cannot believe I was misled by the reviews. This product is impossible to install correctly, I spent a frustrating 20 minutes trying to get this to work and eventually gave up. One, the film is not perfectly sized for screen of my iPad 2, which became a problem because I had to align it centrally around the hone button instead of the edges. This leaves parts of the edges exposed, if you use a case with a big border, this might not be an issue. Two, the cloth that comes in the set is useless. It actually throws off more lint on the screen making installation impossible. Three, the film looks ugly when installed because of the countless bubbles. Glad I could send it back.

I must say I'm thoroughly pleased with this screen protector. It comes with two screen protectors...each individually wrapped and each comes with a microfiber cloth and a little plastic thing to get the bubbles out with (can't think of the name of it lol). I really like the fact that the screen protector not only has a cover for the sticky side but also for the front...that way you can press out the air bubbles with scratching up your screen protector.

The application was relatively easy. You definitely want to make sure that you thoroughly clean off your iPad 2 screen with the microfiber cloth before attempting to put the screen protector on. Once the screen is clean I applied the screen protector. I didn't take off the entire cover for the sticky side all at once. I slowly peeled it away as I placed the screen protector on the screen. I think the holes line up really well. I think the screen protector fits perfectly. As long as you don't stick the entire screen protector down at once you should be able to take it off and replace it if you need to do so. I did get a few small particles on the sticky side...but I had my fan going so it's very possible that they were blown there.

There were air bubbles...but they were easy to get out. I didn't have any major problems getting them out. I've applied "wet" screen protectors before....this was waaaaaaaaaay easier lol. Plus you don't have to wait before using your iPad 2 again. I don't feel like I've lost any touch sensitivity. My fingers glide just as smoothly, if not more, as they did without the screen protector. I don't notice any major fingerprinting marks from my use. The only reason I know I have a screen protector on is because I put it on lol.

I'm not sure how it holds up to scratches...I keep my iPad 2 in a sleeve. My iPad 2 is never really in an environment where it has the potential to get scratched up. But like I said...it comes with two so if the first one does get scratched up I can just replace it. I really do like this screen protector. The only downside I can see to this product is the potential for residue to be left on my iPad 2 screen after I take the screen protector off. I hope it doesn't lol.

I say all that to say that I would definitely recommend this to other people. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

***I did NOT use the enclosed applicator or even look for their own application instructions; I used my own method. I have added an installation section below to include a step-by-step on how I successfully applied this product!***

Pros:
*Remains bubble-free after installation
*All of the edges and corners have stayed perfectly attached (but I do have a silicone skin that comes ~1cm in so that could help)
*There is no "wavy" pattern once it has applied; the screen is entirely uniform.
*While nothing is truly fingerprint resistant, I have noticed hardly any fingerprints. Fingerprints, puppy hair, and dust come off VERY easily with the included cloth.
*Easy Installation with flawless result!

HOW TO INSTALL:
1) Make sure to have ALL of the following at the ready before you start:
* eyeglass lens cleaner & lens cloth
* credit card
* plastic ruler
2) ***Thoroughly clean the screen first using eyeglass lens cleaner and cloth to remove ALL dust and oil.***
3) DO NOT REMOVE THE PLASTIC FILM COVERING THE STICKY SIDE ALL AT ONCE!!!! Peel away only enough of it to align and stick the bottom edge of the protector to the iPad. Be careful to make sure it is centered so that the cutout for the center button will lie in the correct place. As explained in the next step, only reveal the sticky part right before it is ready to be stuck down; the ruler pretty much did that automatically without me having to tug on the film).
4) Place the side of the plastic ruler parallel along/overtop the edge that you have just stuck down and slowly slide it up the rest of the screen, simultaneously slowly pulling the rest of the film off (make sure to put some pressure on the ruler while doing so, this will greatly minimize the bubbles you have to deal with later).
5) Use a credit card to smooth out any bubbles (it's next to impossible to remove bubbles just by hand). Do this by placing the edge of the credit card on the side of the bubble closest to the center of the screen. Press down and sweep the card/push the bubble to the outside of the screen until the protector is bubble-free.

***I had used this same method for the other two protectors I tried but this protector was by far the easiest to apply and the only one that stayed bubble-free, (practically) fingerprint-free, and with no wavy pattern. Additionally, with one of the other two failed protectors, using the credit card and ruler scratched the screen! This was not the case here at all.

Cons:
*Because of the anti-glare/anti-fingerprint quality, the screen looks slightly grainy, but is still perfectly legible and the screen is just as sensitive to touch as it is without a protector.

UPDATE: It's been over a year and my screen protector is still going strong. It does have some VERY faint scratches from puppy claws, travel, etc. These aren't bad and cannot be detected at all if the screen is turned on/lit up; only noticeable if the iPad is turned off and you are looking closely at it when the light is reflecting off it from just the right angle. I will be replacing the screen soon (with this exact same model, of course), however, because it had an unfortunate run-in with a pair of scissors and that scratch has bubbled up just a teeny bit (it's not bad at all and my screen is still untainted, but I'm type-A enough that the itty bitty bubble is annoying).
In terms of sizing: I have the original iPad and it fits perfectly, stopping just at the edge of the glass before the metal, fitting perfectly around the bottom center button. I do not know how compatible it would be with the iPad 2 in terms of size.

I followed the instructions carefully and took my time and still ended up with a lot of bubbles. I even used the applicator that was provided to squeeze them out with little success. This particular protector is a bubble magnet. It's like air automatically seeps in no matter how careful you are plus the applicator does little to get them out. I even tried smoothing with just my hand. I have been able to apply protectors to cell phones without this much trouble. I'm going to try a different brand because this protector is horrible.
