When Apple unveiled the iPad back in January of 2010, the company’s competitors rightly saw a huge opportunity. Now that Steve Jobs & Co. had created the first modern tablet computer, other manufacturers could build on the ideas it originated. They could offer features that it didn’t. They could deliver more bang for the buck.

Almost fourteen months later, the promise of a tablet market is still mostly just that: promise. RIM, for instance, announced its intriguing BlackBerry PlayBook last September but still hasn’t revealed a ship date. HP says only that it hopes to have its TouchPad out by summer. Motorola’s Xoom, meanwhile, hit stores in February with so many of its theoretically iPad-crushing features yet to be implemented—4G wireless, Adobe’s Flash Player software, the memory-card slot—that it should have come with a wad of IOUs in the box. (Adobe says that Flash will be ready on March 18th.)

Clearly, this tablet stuff is tricky. There is, however, one company that’s managed to ship a model that’s unquestionably superior to the iPad. That company would be Apple–and the tablet is the iPad 2 Dell inspiron 1440 battery , which went on sale at Apple Stores and other retailers on March 11th. It’s not a profound rethinking of the first-generation iPad; plenty of things, in fact, haven’t changed a bit. But it’s a significantly more refined take on a device that was pretty darned polished in the first place.

The original iPad bucked Apple’s reputation for lofty pricetags by starting at 9, about half what many pundits had expected. That was partly because Apple priced it aggressively, and partly because it didn’t make you spring for 3G wireless and maximum storage capacity unless you needed them. The iPad 2 continues the tradition: You can still spend as little as 9 for one with 16GB of storage space and Wi-Fi capability, or as much as 9 for one with 64GB and both Wi-Fi and 3G wireless. (The AT&T 3G models available last time around have been joined by ones for Verizon Wireless’s network; monthly data plans start at for AT&T and for Verizon, and don’t require you to sign a contract.) Every version is available in both black and white variants.

By contrast, the Xoom currently comes in only one version: a black model with 32GB and Verizon Wireless 3G. It sells for 9, which is more than the most comparable iPad but not outrageous—if what you want is a black Xoom with 32GB and Verizon 3G.

Apple provided me with an AT&T iPad 2 for review. After I picked it up, I immediately hopped on a plane and headed to the South by Southwest Interactive geekfest in Austin, where I hoped the tablet might attract envious stares. Nope. Less than 24 hours after the new models had gone on sale, I saw more attendees toting them than original iPads.

The brand-new iPads were easy to spot–the single most striking thing about the second-generation model is that there’s so much less of it. The aluminum-and-glass case is now just .34″ thick and the Wi-Fi version weighs only 1.33 lbs, making it 33 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter than its predecessor. Adding to the general sleekness is the way the case tapers to a skinny rounded edge rather than the chunky, well-defined sides that made the first iPad look a little like a giant slice of metallic toast.

Many gadget specs are far more exciting in principle than reality, but the iPad’s new weight and thickness matter more than the math might suggest. It’s much more pleasant to hold for extended periods than its predecessor–it feels less like a classy notebook computer that’s had its keyboard surgically removed and more like an entirely new class of device.

The display is still the same pleasing 9.7″ color touchscreen with the same 1024-by-768 resolution. Even so, the experience of interacting with it is different and better. As you use your fingertips to slide from screen to screen, zoom into photos, and scroll through Web pages, everything feels more effortlessly responsive. It’s that much closer to Apple’s favorite adjective for the iPad: Magical.

The sprightly feel comes courtesy of the potent new chips that Apple has crammed into that thin case. This is its first mobile gadget with a fast dual-core processor. Also inside are souped-up graphics capabilities that Apple says are up to nine times faster than before. And the Dell studio xps 1340 battery company performed an upgrade that it doesn’t publicize by doubling the RAM from 256MB to 512MB.

Despite the more advanced componentry, the iPad’s battery life remains the same—and it’s impressive for both its duration and its honesty. In a world where laptop claims of “up to twelve hours of battery life” often mean “five hours if you’re lucky,” Apple’s estimate for the iPad—up to ten hours of Web surfing over Wi-Fi, watching video, and/or listening to music—is utterly realistic. That doesn’t compare with Amazon’s Kindle, which has a monochrome E-Ink screen that can run for a month on a charge. But it does mean that even iPad junkies may be able to go for several days without venturing near a power plug.

The iPad 2′s major “new feature” is only a medium-sized whoop, which is why I haven’t mentioned it until now. The tablet now features cameras on the front and back, both of which you can use with FaceTime, the slick, fun video-calling software that also runs on the iPhone 4, the iPod Touch, and Macs. As always, you can only make calls over Wi-Fi, not 3G, and only to other people who own Apple devices that have FaceTime; similar apps without these limitations are likely to pop up.

The cameras can also be used to shoot snapshots, and the rear one does passable 720p high-def video. But the rear camera has an anemic .7 megapixels of still-picture resolution and no flash, and capturing video with a device the size of a magazine doesn’t feel particularly natural. (Of course, if you’re the type of person who’s smitten with the iPad 2, odds are sky high that you already own a phone that can double as an adequate camera.)

Strangely enough, some shoppers may find the cameras less of an inducement to buy than a new accessory: Apple’s insanely clever Smart Cover screen protectors ( in polyurethane, in leather). The moment you hold one in the vicinity of the iPad 2′s left edge, magnets hidden in the tablet seize the cover’s hinge and guide it into place. The articulated surface lets you fold the cover into a triangle that can prop up the iPad in two positions: A graceful slope that makes for comfier typing, and an upright stance that’s ideal for movie-watching. And they’re lined with a microfiber material that helps to polish away fingerprints from the notoriously smudgy iPad screen.

Available in a total of ten colors (five polyurethane choices for apiece, five leather ones), Smart Covers are ultimately as much about personalization as protection—they leave the iPad’s backside vulnerable to scratches—but they’re among the most ingenious accessories ever devised by Apple or anybody else.

At .99 each they’re a steal, and proof, if anybody still needs it, that the theory that iPads are good only for consuming content is silly and wrongheaded.

Speaking of things to come, the iPad’s near-monopoly on the tablet business isn’t going to last much longer. The PlayBook and TouchPad will show up before long; so will a gaggle of models based on Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb, the operating system that debuted in rough-but-promising form on the Xoom. The longer you wait to join the tablet age, the more choices you’ll have.

Even once the field gets more crowded, though, it’s easy to believe that the iPad 2 could retain a comfortable lead on the pack. Apple invented this category and understands it better than anyone else. And by releasing such a solid second-generation machine so swiftly, it’s told the rest of the industry that catching up could turn out to be a never-ending battle.

The iPad 2 monster review : Part two News

Because the iPad is such a versatile device, it’s as difficult to predict what you’d use it for as it is to predict what you use your computer for, beyond a few generalities.

As you might remember from Part 1 (Form Factor and the Smart Cover) of this review, I was testing out the new iPad 2 while awaiting Jury Duty, and unfortunately I was selected for a trial. This involves spending a lot of time in the courtroom and some downtime hanging out in the jury room. I quickly discovered one of my fellow jurors, who worked as a Geek Squad Manager, also had an iPad 2. While I’ve been an iPad user since the first iteration, Juror #1 was a first-time user.

One week is not really enough for me to get a wide and representative cross-section of how the general iPad-using populace employs their devices, particularly when it’s one week of mostly being locked in a jury room; but at the very least, I can tell you the differing ways in which both I and Juror #1 used ours, both in the building and at home, over the course of that first week.

As I mentioned, I’ve been an iPad user from early on, using the Wi-Fi only model. The iPad 2 I tested out had 3G sony Vgp-bps2c battery so it added some functionality that was new to me.

Since purchasing the first iPad, my reading has skyrocketed. This is not a function of the iPad simply having a reader app; it’s the result of having this little techno-ecosystem that works together. If I’m researching something online, it’s a quick matter to hop over to Amazon, find books on the subject, read reviews of them, and quickly purchase them. For various reasons I prefer buying books through Amazon and reading them on the Kindle app as opposed to using Apple’s iBooks, and I really appreciate that Apple has not blocked this competitor the way that Sony traditionally would have. Because I have busy days I do most of my reading at night, in bed before going to sleep. For this I prefer a chunkier case like InCase’s Convertible Book Jacket, as it provides a good handle area and has a thickness to it comfortable for resting on your stomach or chest. (Without a case, or with the Smart Cover, the cold metal of the iPad leaves a line in your skin.)

The other reason the iPad is great for bed-reading is for occasions when there is someone else in the bed with you trying to get some shuteye. As it requires no light source, it’s easy to read without disturbing others.

The dictionary integrated in both the Kindle and iBooks apps is a godsend when reading complicated scientific or financial texts: Hit a word you don’t recognize and the definition pops up. I use this feature so much I often question my own education level.

But these reasons alone are not why my reading has skyrocketed; it has increased because of the ecosystem. Since I own an iPhone 4 that syncs to the iPad and also has the Kindle app, I can continue reading anywhere. For example, I read at night on the iPad; the next morning I get on the signal-less subway, and assuming I’ve synched the Kindle app before going underground, I can pick up reading the same book on my iPhone in the same place; later that night I pop the iPad open, and the book picks up just where I left off. Because I always have my phone on me, any moment of downtime—waiting on line at the bank or post office, waiting at a cafe for an interviewee to show up, etc.—becomes a reading opportunity to supplement my nighttime reading. In this manner I’m able to tear through books at a rate I simply couldn’t before, because I never carried around all of the books I was currently reading.

This ecosystem effect is something that’s difficult to clearly advertise in a commercial, but to me it is one of the most  important features of the iDevices, and a large part of why I love them so much.

One thing I never predicted using the iPad for, and which I now do regularly, is use it to help me refurbish vintage sewing machines. I’ve downloaded PDF manuals and adjuster’s manuals to various models, and when I’m working on a particular machine I have the iPad display the diagrams I need to refer to. Using the Smart Cover in the vertical position is great because it displays the material at the angle I need to see while occupying a very small footprint on the sony vgp-bps8a battery worksurface.

I prefer using the iPad to paper versions of the various manuals I need to refer to for two reasons: One, I occasionally need to switch from one manual to another, or even over to an instructional YouTube video on how to perform a particular operation. It’s much easier to have all of that in one device. Two, sometimes while doing the repairs my hands become oily, greasy or otherwise dirty. If I touched paper with these hands I’d foul the vintage manuals I own, which instantly decreases their value. In contrast, swiping from page to page on the iPad only requires a fingertip and leaves very little dirt/oil/grease on the glass, and whatever residue it does leave is easy to clean off afterwards. You’d think I’d be afraid to touch the iPad with grimy hands, but it’s just the opposite because it is so easy to clean.

The coolest thing about the magnetic Smart Cover, as you can see up top, is that it sticks to refrigerators (and metal tool cabinets), holding the iPad securely in position even during swiping. If I’m watching something on my laptop but then need to do something in the kitchen, I can slap the iPad on the ‘fridge and pick up where I left off. And as with the sewing machine repair, I don’t care if there’s messy stuff on my hands; as long as my fingers aren’t dripping with fluid I’ll still tap and swipe the screen readily and give it a wipe at the end.

The iPad 2 I tested was a 3G model, enabling me to use the Maps app on the road, which I’d never done before. I had a weekend gig to do out in the wilds of New Jersey, where I always get lost because New Jersey road signage is the worst in the nation. I had my co-pilot navigate using the iPad, which is simple to use even for someone who can’t read maps: There’s a button you can hit so that the map orients in the direction you’re traveling, and that blinking blue dot indicator showing your location makes it hard to fail at navigating.

A shooter and I were heading into Jersey to do some videowork for a client, a last-minute job. Since the iPad had 3G, in between navigation tasks I was able to have the shooter review the client’s current videos on YouTube, boning up on the material en route. We also realized, halfway there, that we had forgotten some materials. The shooter poked around on the map, located a nearby town that had stores, and guided us to the appropriate exit for our last-minute shopping.

These latter two tasks are not things I would have anticipated using the iPad for. But if you build something that works well and give it connectivity, useful applications just seem to present themselves.

On top of this I use the iPad like you see in the commercials: For web browsing, e-mail reading and light composition, and brief sessions of gameplaying when trying to de-stress. On long train and plane rides I’ve found my original iPad invaluable. The battery just doesn’t die, whether I’m reading, watching movies, listening to music or killing zombies.

Cons of 1st Gen iPads

Adobe Flash Player – Flash files do make things slow and limiting. This was understandable with iphones but not with iPads. The blue question mark for no flash players is a frustrating thing to see. No one can have a great Web surfing experience without Flash. Apple needs to sort this out with Adobe in whichever way possible or find an alternative with iPad 2.0 soon.
Multitasking - The first edition of iPad needs to improve its multitasking abilities. iPads have raised our expectations through the roof. With such a powerful processor, apple should have been able to incorporate multitasking on iPads easily. Like for example, you can’t listen to WunderRadio while reading a book unless of course the station is streaming on Safari. We can put up with the battery life getting shorter, but definitely not without multitasking.
HDMI Out – Currently there isn’t any wireless or an HDTV connection to a TV. Apple TV could get easily replaced if there was an HDTV out. It’s a little surprising why they haven’t thought of connecting the two most important appliances. And I am pretty sure it will be added in 2nd generation iPads.
Camera Option- A front facing camera for video iChat would be an amazing feature for iPads, adding more utility. This can make it hugely popular with every generation. I’m sure it has to do with the price but a camera option is a must, whatsoever.
Widescreen Option- You can tap on a movie to see it in either fullscreen or widescreen. It is not as wide as most widescreen formats are but it doesn’t make a big difference watching movies on it either.
AT&T only for 3G- It is great to have no cellular contracts for 3G but the current AT&T’s service has been less than great for iPhone users. This will furthermore clog the network with more devices trying to connect through it. I believe, Verizon could be a more apt alternative for US users.

Well no device is perfect with it’s first generation release. And it is surely likely to improve and have added features on the wishlist. But overall Ipad rocks. I plan to make it my all time companion soon. Don’t you want it too?
